Do’s and Don’ts: Wearing Pastels

Our days of collecting Easter eggs in frilly dresses and baskets may be long since passed (oh, to be five again!), but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Easter in style. Aside from the Easter Bunny and egg hunts, one of the most exciting things about Easter is the fashion. And while pastels are the go-to palette for Easter, the opportunity to wear them shouldn’t end there. We have all of spring to enjoy and incorporate such soft and sweet colors into our wardrobe, but the key is to switch things up a little so that you don’t look like you’re on your way to an egg hunt each and every time. So to help you master this spring staple trend, dear readers, I’ve outlined some of the do’s and don’ts of wearing pastels.
DO: Wear pastels! You may automatically think chocolate eggs and bunnies when you think pastels, but the truth is that they can be worn anytime during spring. And although the idea of wearing pastels may be a little intimidating (Too light? Too girly?) at times, it’s all about how you wear them that will have you en route to a fashion bravo.
DON’T: Stick to just florals. While pastel floral dresses are suberb for spring, this isn’t the only option for incorporating pastels into your wardrobe. Play around with other fun prints like polka dots, stripes or watercolor (very popular this season).
DO: Color-block pastels. You’re already aware that color-blocking is having a major moment this season and, even though you normally see it done with bright solids, you can lighten things up a little with some sweet pastels. Keep things chic and simple with two colors for a modern alternative to pastel prints.
DON’T: Hide your pastels in the dark. While pastel colors are naturally assumed to be a daytime choice, there is no reason why you can’t also wear them at night. A solid pastel dress accented with black shoes and clutch is beyond chic and a fresh alternative to the LBD.
DO: Toughen up your pastels. Pastels don’t have to be girly all the time. You can balance out the softness and ultra-femininity of pastels with tough pieces like a leather jacket and ankle booties. Similarly, utilitarian anoraks and flat lace-up boots make a nice counterbalance to pastels.
DON’T: Get too matchy-matchy. Pastel prints are gorgeous on their own. A pastel floral dress should be the focal point of your ensemble and does not need perfectly matching accessories to complete the look. Instead, keep your accessories simple and subdued. Tip: Nude heels are the perfect choice for busy pastel prints.
I’m most excited about color-blocking pastels this season. Mixed with some neutral colors, pastels look absolutely gorgeous and contemporary. Will you wear pastels this spring? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
